About Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya (LJSSS)

For over 67 years, Sarvodaya has been Sri Lanka’s largest grassroots organization dedicated to community development, conflict resolution, and peace building. Founded in 1958, Sarvodaya is built on the principle of Shramadana—the voluntary sharing of labor, resources, and knowledge for the common good. With this ethos, the movement has reached more than 15,000 villages, empowering people to take charge of their own development through collective action.

Sarvodaya has played a pivotal role in some of the island’s most difficult moments. During Sri Lanka’s decades-long civil war (1983–2009), the organization worked to bridge divides between communities, promote reconciliation, and restore trust. In the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Sarvodaya mobilized one of the largest humanitarian responses in the country, helping thousands of families rebuild their lives and livelihoods.

Today, Sarvodaya continues to be a driving force for holistic development. Its work spans education, health, environmental sustainability, women's empowerment, youth development, disaster relief, and spiritual awakening, guided by its founding vision of “awakening all.” By bringing people together across differences and nurturing self-reliant communities, Sarvodaya remains at the heart of Sri Lanka’s journey toward peace, dignity, and sustainable progress.
