Sarvodaya's Service Projects
A Vibrant Journey of Service, Culture, and Human Connection
Sarvodaya’s service projects offer visiting student groups and individuals a deeply enriching opportunity to engage in meaningful, community led development while experiencing the heart of rural Sri Lankan life.
When a group visits, Sarvodaya collaborates closely with the local village to organize a service project that addresses a long awaited community need, one identified and prioritized through a collective decision making process involving people from all walks of life. These projects may involve constructing community facilities, supporting local schools, enhancing environmental sustainability, or improving access to basic services.
Sarvodaya uses a unique strategy called Shramadana, which means "sharing time, energy, and labor for the benefit of all", to implement these service projects. This approach unites villagers and visitors in a spirit of selfless giving, cooperation, and collective action, making the work more than just physical effort, it becomes a shared act of love and service.
During the project period, visitors stay with local host families, gaining an authentic understanding of rural life. With basic living facilities and daily interactions with villagers, participants experience the rhythm of local life, support day today community work, and become part of the village’s social fabric.
All service projects are implemented through established village societies and are guided by Sarvodaya’s experienced field staff, ensuring the work is sustainable, inclusive, and rooted in the real needs of the community.
What makes these projects truly special is the spirit of unity they inspire. Villagers and visitors work hand in hand, share stories, meals, and laughter, building bonds that transcend language and background. By the end of the project, visitors often feel they’ve become part of the community, creating lifelong connections and memories that stay in the hearts of all who participate.
